How to Transform Your Home from Dim to Bright

How to Transform Your Home from Dim to Bright

Have you ever noticed a difference in your overall well-being after being under the sun? You may be hot and sweaty, but you’ll also feel good. A study on daylight exposure showed that office workers sleep better and are healthier if they work exposed to natural light. You can experience the same benefits if you allow natural light into your home. There are strategic ways to enjoy the sunlight without high utility bills or energy consumption.

Paint Your Walls Light

That is, use a lighter color palette that will brighten the space and reflect light. In a room where sunlight is limited or absent, the right paint colors can help bring light in. Check the label of a paint chip card and look for paint with a light-reflected value (LRV) of 70 or higher. It runs on a scale of 0 to 100—with 0 being black and 100 being white. The higher the value, the more light a paint reflects, while those with lower values absorb more light. Neutral, warm colors, such as beige, white, and pale blues, are recommended for interior walls.

Check Window Treatments

While lined drapes and curtains keep the cold from coming in, they’ll also block natural light. Switch to sheer curtains during the warmer months, or master the art of layering to enjoy privacy and sun on demand.

A better option would be to install window blinds to enhance privacy control while allowing natural light into your home. If a room is located where privacy isn’t a problem, you may want to skip the window covers.

Install Large Windows

If you want a more permanent solution to increase the amount of sunlight entering your home, install larger windows, add new large ones, or increase the size of existing ones. If possible, add a floor-to-ceiling window. If a new installation is impossible, adding a transom window may be an alternative you can explore. Make sure to regularly clean windows of smudge, dirt, and dust so sunlight can effectively pass through.

Use Glass Doors

Glass doors help increase the flow of sunlight between rooms and allow for a seamless transition from indoors to outdoors. You won’t have to open the door or go out to enjoy the view of your garden from your living room or kitchen. Simply take a seat by the glass door and soak in the view.

So, where possible, replace solid doors with glass ones. Not sure if a sliding door will work with your home’s design and layout? Custom sliding doors offer an excellent solution. Pick a layout with 2, 3, or 4 sliding panels to match your home.

Add Skylights Or Sun Tubes

A skylight or sun tube is especially beneficial in rooms without windows or where only a small one can be installed, such as a bathroom. It not only brings sunlight in but also provides you with a view of the outside of the sky, which can contribute to your overall experience.

Maximizing natural light and brightening up your home can be done in various ways.
